Jedi Master Urik Anjek strolled across the grounds of the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4 with his usual stooped gait. His senses tingled as all around him students reached out with their minds through the Force, some feeling, some training, some just enjoying. There was an air of determination about the place today, he thought, students old and new were pushing themselves to understand their limits and their control. This was one of the reasons why he was there.

He walked down a winding hall toward a training room he had claimed for the afternoon's session, stopping every so often in admiration of the old architecture for it never ceased to intrigue him, even after all of the years he had been coming. Entering the room he cast a critical eye. Everything seemed to be in the rightful place and ready to begin. The walls were blast proof, in order to protect the students and masters alike. A training droid hovered, activated, in the corner, waiting for practice. From his cloak he pulled the training lightsaber and placed it on a table beside the door. He walked to the center of the room and sat down, crossing his legs and assuming a meditative position.

His intention was not to meditate. His thoughts dwell on the afternoon ahead and the upcoming training session. He had mentally prepared today's lesson with his relatively new apprentice. They would continue with rudimentary lightsaber skill and Urik was eager to see the progress of Varaleah Demaris, his first apprentice. A ghost of a grin graced his mouth as he recalled the conversation with Master Skywalker regarding his undertaking of the young woman.

Urik Anjek knew he possessed the qualities of a good teacher. He had eternal patience and a knack for simplifying the most difficult tasks. He had always known that he would eventually take an apprentice, he felt it would be his duty. Yet he had not expected to be talked into it so quickly or so soon. He felt pleased with the faith Master Skywalker had placed in him, even if he did not fully believe he was deserving of the confidence. Despite this Urik had been enjoying the last few months. He found training and encouraging his apprentice rewarding. She was a sharp student and the sense of accomplishment he felt when she excelled was a new and welcome experience.

As he waited he felt a familiar presence growing near. He stood and concentrated on it, his mind reaching out and clarifying that she was aware of his own whereabouts. Satisfied, he prepared to greet his apprentice.

[OOC: Sorry its so short not much to work with yet! But hey at least its up]

Varaleah Demaris walked through the halls of the Jedi academy at a quick pace. She eyed the Chrono watch on her wrist and winced. She had left her chambers late, so she was going to be a few minutes later than she was supposed to be. Way to make a great impression, Vara, she scolded herself inwardly. She pushed through some groups of students who were going too slowly and soon enough neared the training room where she was meeting her Jedi Master.

Just before she entered, she stopped and reached up to quickly pull her hair up into a ponytail so that it would be out of her face during the training session. She quickly looked over her clothes, which consisted of the normal apprentice outfit, with a pair of boots and belt around her waist. She felt the Jedi master waiting for her reach out with the Force and notify her of where he was. Vara let out a breath before entering the training room, hoping the scolding she was expecting wouldn't be too harsh.

Vara knew that Urik hadn't been a Jedi Master for very long, and that she was his first apprentice. The discussion she'd had with Master Skywalker about him had pretty much assured her of the fact that he would be a good teacher for her, though she was a little nervous and shy. Perhaps it was the fact that he was new to Masterhood and she was being trained that would make them a good pair- they would be learning together, and learning from each other in the process. Or, that was what Master Skywalker seemed to imply. Sometimes the famous Jedi had difficult ways of expressing a message to someone.

She smiled a bit as she remembered one of their last training sessions. The focus had been on blocking, and she had managed to accomplish quite a few maneuvers that even she didn't expect from herself. She had been rather proud that she'd accomplished them, though it wasn't something she was very willing to show in front of him. Vara then pushed the memories aside and entered the training room.

She looked around, first looking for the location of her Jedi master. He was in a meditative position...yet she took another glance around and saw the table that the training saber sat on. Did he expect her to immediately join him, or take the saber and then join him? Gritting her teeth, she took a chance and picked the saber up, keeping it in one hand while she walked over to where he sat. She pulled herself down on the floor in a similar position to his, her head held down as she waited for the Jedi master to speak. She placed the practice saber in her lap and rested her hands on her kneecaps as she waited.

(It's fine- it's not too short. Sorry it took me a bit to reply. Having to go to work a bit earlier than normal this morning made me run out of time to reply. XD)

Urik did not budge as his apprentice entered the room and took up a position opposite him. He kept his head bowed for a couple of minutes. Finally deciding to relieve her patience he raised his head and his eyes and studied her. "Good afternoon, Varaleah." Through his half closed eyes he glanced at the training saber she had picked up from the table. He smiled briefly before he stood and righted himself.

"Today I want to work on your lightsaber skills and reactions." He paced the floor a few meters before turning back to look at his apprentice again. "As you know the use of the lightsaber is integral to the Jedi. All students must learn to create and wield their own weapons to an acceptable standard." He tread heavily to the corner of the training room and reached out to grasp the training droid. He pressed a couple of buttons on the small control panel and the hovering droid floated to the centre of the room, stopping in front of his student. "But before you can even contemplate creating and moulding your own lightsaber you must familiarize yourself with more than the mere basics. You must see your lightsaber as an extension of yourself."

He moved a step to his left and leaned his tall frame against the wall. He folded his arms across his chest. "Extend your senses and trust your instincts, they will not fail you. Remain calm, clear your mind of all irrelevant thought. The training droid before you is programmed to shoot random blasts at you. You must block these blasts with your lightsaber, and do all you must to avoid being hit. Focus on protecting yourself." A smile played on his lips. "The room is blast proof, so you needn’t worry about causing damage."

"Rise, apprentice. Activate the training lightsaber and ready yourself. I will be on hand to aid and give any instruction I can."

He awaited her ready stance, unable to deny the interest that had piqued within him. He was looking forward to witnessing her progress.

"Good morning, Master," Vara greeted, keeping her head held down. She listened to him speak, and looked up as he explained what her task would be. She nodded, letting out a breath as she took the practice saber into her left hand and stood, watching as he set up the practice droid and then moved to lean against the wall.

Vara watched the training droid, which floated idly waiting for her to activate the saber, for a moment longer before bringing the saber up and moving into a defensive position with one foot in front of the other. She flicked the blue blade to life and watched as the droid circled around her.

The first blast it sent went to her right side, which she deflected when bringing her blade down toward it. The droid sent a few more blasts, which she was able to easily deflect again. The droid circled around her some more, taunting her. It came around to her back, and before she could spin around to deflect it, a blast was sent to the bottom of her back, making her squeal out with an "Ouch!"

She deactivated the saber, sending the droid back into idle mod. "Blasted droid," she said, wishing she could kick at it. It was then that she remembered her master was in the room, and a blush came to her cheeks as she avoided eye contact for the moment.

(It's late, which I deeply apologize for, but it's here!)

Urik nodded slightly when his apprentice deflected the first blast. He continued to watch closely as she moved with confidence to parry the next shots. He intended not to miss a trick so he may discuss her progress with her later. He murmured in surprise when she allowed the droid to get the better of her and deliver a swift bolt to her backside. He could not help the slight grunt of amusement when she cursed the droid obviously forgetting his presence for a moment.

He moved away from the wall and approached her. "Do not let it distract you. Do not let it cloud your instincts. You must know the movements it will make before it makes them - and therein will lie your victory over the machine." He stepped closer and was about to open his mouth again when another presence deterred him. He looked to the open arch door and raised a hand. "Come."

The young padawan who had been standing there and watching the goings on with awe scurried closer into the room. He bowed deeply but hurriedly to the Jedi Master and held out a sheet of flimsiplast. Urik took it from the child and smiled. "Thank you. You may leave." He could not help but notice that the new recruits seemed to be getting younger and younger by the cycle. He looked at the piece of flimsi closely.

His brow furrowed as he read. He glanced at his apprentice knowing that she would be interested in the message's contents. "It is a message from Master Skywalker," he told her. "It involves you too, so I shall read it to you." He cleared his throat and began to read aloud.

"Master Anjek -
I'm sure you have felt the disturbance the death of Master Jarlock has caused. His death must be investigated as I fear the circumstances were not natural and his apprentice remains unaccounted for. I wish for you to undertake this task and with your own apprentice get to the bottom of it.
May the Force be with you both."

When he finished reading the note he pocketed it a compartment beneath his cloak. "We will have to continue lightsaber training en route I'm afraid."

Vara nodded and sighed softly, wishing she hadn't reacted so poorly to the droid in front of her Master. She was about to close her eyes and prepare herself for another spar against the droid when she saw the Jedi Master hold his hand up. She turned her head to one side curiously as a young boy entered and walked toward Master Anjek. She clipped the practice saber to her belt and walked over to him, listening as he explained what the boy had delivered.

She and her Jedi Master were being sent on a mission, which would be her very first. A prideful smile came to her lips as she played the message again in her head.

"When do we leave?" she asked, with only a hint of impatience in her voice. She was anxious to pack and leave as soon as possible.

(Sorry it's so short, but at least we should be able to make a new thread now, which you can start with your next post, I guess.)
